Midterm Submission

Image
For my cover page I chose to use a bright red plate with a single sandwich on it because when I was doing my research many of the magazines had a plate of food as their cover image. I chose to use a red plate to make the cover stand out. I really liked the incorporation of red so I used this color through out my magazine. For my contents page is liked the ides of a minimalist design. So I drew on line in the middle of the page to have a separation and then split my articles into categories. When I got to my article I used pictures of the stand its self and pictures of the food they serve. In some of the magazines that I did research on they had on quote or saying taken out and put in bold in some of their articles. I really liked this and decided to incorporate it into my article.

My Flat Plan

Image
For my flat plan I decided to add articles that I felt would be in a magazine primarily about barbecue. This includes recipes for meats, sides, desserts, and drinks. This also includes how to set up a picnic, what music works with the type of food you're serving, and what you should know before buying a smoker. In some of the magazines I had researched I found that they included question and answer segments. So I included one into my flat plan because I feel like this answers questions that many readers have, but don't have the capabilities to ask. In addition, I saw in many other magazines that they included some kind of contest at the end of their issues. I thought this was a fun idea so I added one into mine too.

Table of Contents Template

Image
I haven't quite decided what my other articles in my table of contents are going to be. I know that I want ton continue with the theme of barbecue because that is what my issue is going to be about. I will probably add a few recipe articles and a article about throwing a cookout with barbecue. I'm adding the cookout article because while I was doing my research many of the magazine had articles about table decor or about themed dinners ad such. I will have a photo for each article that I put into the table of contents. This is because I feel the use of visuals are very important.

Scouting Locations

I plan on taking pictures at Alday's BBQ. They have a food truck on the corner of Beneva and Bahia Vista in Sarasota, Florida. I'm choosing this because I want everyone too see what goes on inside of Alday's and how the food looks. I will take over head shots of some of the food for my cover page. Which probably be their most popular pork sandwich with two sides. I will try to set up this food to be photogenic, but as we know it is hard to make bbq look photogenic.

Cover Design Template

When my group an I went to come up with a title we wanted something catchy. We spent a good amount of time trying to come up with alliterations or words that rhyme. We finally came up with Savory Sarasota and everyone loved it. We chose these fonts because we wanted to keep it simple and not have too much going on for our cover page.

Preparing for Interviews

I plan to write a review of a local barbecue food truck in Sarasota and Bradenton,  Florida, Alday's BBQ. Alday's is very popular with the locals and with the "snow birds" that come vacation in Sarasota. I plan on interviewing the owners Jeff and Lisa Alday. I also plan to interview one or two of  their employees. Each food truck only has two (sometimes only one) employees working the truck all day and they cook, serve, and take orders. Here are some questions I am planning on asking the owners: - How did Alday's BBQ start? - What steps have you taken to lure in customers? - How you describe the food that you serve? - Have you ever had a bad review of your food? How do you deal with those kinds of reviews? - What are your plans for Alday's in the future? The readers would want to know the answers to these questions because lots of people love to hear the story of how a restaurant began especially a family owned one. Many people also love to hear how inv...

Magazine Genre Research - Food and Wine

Image
Food and Wine is a monthly food magazine. It features recipes, cooking tips, travel information, restaurant reviews, chefs, wine pairings, and seasonal content.  Like most magazines they will differ what they have in each issue by the time of year. This is because different foods are popular at different times of the year. On the cover of each magazine they will have a dish that matches the theme of that particular issue. They will then add some additional information on the cover as to what else is written inside the magazine. Just like most magazines Food & Wine has many advertisements in the beginning and end of the magazine and fewer as you get towards the middle. Many of these advertisements target women and families. This is because most of the people who are reading this particular magazine are women and those with families.  Food & Wine has a total of 918,106 subscriptions. Their total circulation is 936,062. Through social media Food & Wine re...
